Overview |
The ancient walled city of Famagusta, originally founded by the Egyptians, offers an enthralling view of times long gone; craftsmen still fashion by hand a variety of pottery, copper and jewellery. The town is the site of the incredible Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, which was once the Cathedral of St Sophia, as well as innumerable other historical treasures, such as the Tower of Othello, built by the man on whom Shakespeare based one of his most famous plays.. Some of north Cyprus' best, and quietest, beaches are nearby, to the North of the town, and Famagusta makes an ideal base from which to explore the incredible unspoiled beauty of the Karpaz Peninsula, where you are more likely to meet a small herd of wild donkeys than other holidaymakers!
It is possible to reach Famagusta and the Karpaz Peninsula and return in just one day from Kyrenia, but it is much better to stay overnight here. The Karpaz is a region of truly exceptional beauty, where you can drive for miles without even seeing another car. As well as villages that are apparently frozen in time, the Karpaz offers huge areas of open countryside and long, deserted beaches. |
