Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in the country along with St. Petersburg. Moscow was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky in 1147. The city is cloaked by hills and is criss-crossed by the river Moscova. From Moscow you can travel to other cities through channels and rivers. The city is enormous and has a surface of 1,035 square kilometers and its population is of 9.299.000 people. The best way to travel is by subway. The subway has eleven lines and 156 stations. If we add them all the routes of the lines are 260 kilometers, some metro stations of Moscow are almost museums with their decoration. The city is divided into concentric rings so it's easy to locate. Moscow is one of the oldest and most beautiful Russian cities. The main place to start a visit to Moscow is Red Square. Red Square is next to the Kremlin the main attractions of Moscow. Red Square was designed by Tsar Ivan III, with the aim of having a vacant space next to the Kremlin to prevent the so habitual fires in the epoch. When we first time step into Red Square it will look magnificent and is not for less because it has 74,831 square meters, 695 meters long and 130 meters wide. Red Square is bordered by the Kremlin, the department store GUM, St. Basil's Cathedral and Lenin's Mausoleum also known as Lenin's Tomb. Other main sites to visit in Moscow include Old Arbat Street (full of souvenir vendors, lousy restaurants, tourist cafes artists…), Tretyakov Gallery - one of the world's greatest museums, Pushkin Museum, Bolshoi Theatre and Novodevichy Convent. |
