Laos Travel Guide

Are you looking forward to spend your vacation in a laid-back style, wandering in the valleys, watching a beautiful sunset, away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life? Then Laos is the destination for you, where you can relax and compose your mind and find solace in the stunningly beautiful surroundings. Although Laos is somewhat forgotten on the tourism map, travellers are nowadays planning their trips to explore this little country. This Laos travel guide is dedicated to provide tourism and travel information about the country, as well as travel tips and vacation ideas.

Laos is a Southeast Asian landlocked country, sharing its borders with China and Myanmar to the north, Cambodia to the south, Vietnam to the east and Thailand to the west. Being surrounded by vast countries by all sides, Laos looks very tiny indeed. The country has been through a long history of invasions by the Khmers, the Siamese & the French and has suffered bomb attacks during the Vietnam War. Today's Laos is a calm, quiet, countryside-like place, a sure gem amidst the noisy neighbouring countries.

Vientiane, the capital city, is the largest village town in Asia. The place is a treasure house of scenic beauty and ample tourist attractions. Situated on the banks of the Mekong River, Vientiane is famous for its ancient French architectural buildings, glorious golden temples & innumerable boulevards of trees. You will spot hundreds of Buddhist monks in the city, friendly natured and always ready to give a helping hand.

Moving ahead of Vientiane, travellers can visit the ancient capital city, Luang Prabanmg, which has been declared as a world heritage. Being enclaved with mountains and rivers, this city has a royal look. The places to visit are the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham. Some other major cities in Laos are Huay Xai, Pakse, Savannakhet and Pakbeng.

Laos is very less popular in the tourism industry. However, if you take a closer look at the country, there are a number of extraordinary places of interest over here. Si Phan Don is a collection of over 400 islands towards the southern end of River Mekong, which is a nice entity for travellers to enjoy water sports and spot some dolphins in the mysterious waters. Another striking place in Laos is the 'Plain of Jars', known for its ancient remnants of jars of various sizes from the Iron Age, including King Khun Jeuam's victory cup as well. Ahead of this place is the reconstructed city of Phonsavan, a must-see place for all visitors. Moreover, tourists must try not to miss places like the famous Khon Phaen Falls (Southeast Asia's largest falls), the mysterious Pak Ou Caves and the mesmerising Kuang Si Falls. Laos is also known for its khmer temples at Champasak, built in Angkor style and declared as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. One can also pay a visit to the newly discovered Tham Nong Pafa Cave with around 200 ancient statues of Buddha inside it.

The best time of the year to visit Laos is from November to March, when the climate is cool and it rains mildly. Eating out in Laos is very delightful. The Lao cuisine is somewhat similar to Thai food, a good mix of choicest vegetables, fresh herbs, exotic spices and a whole lot of hot chillies. 'Laap' is the national dish and 'Tam maak hung' is a favourite delicacy over here. You can also tyr your hand at savouries like 'mok pa', 'ping kai' and 'pa daek'. Those who drink should not miss to taste 'Beer Lao', made from exclusive Laotian jasmine rice.

You can have your stay in Laos at rented hotels and guesthouses located in the vicinity of almost all the chief tourist attractions. Air travel service is active with international airports at Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

If you still have any doubt whether Laos is tourism-friendly or not, just pay a visit and you will be happy to have taken the ride. Trek along the mountains, have a refreshing sauna bath at spas or take a stroll down the quiet lanes...it's time to relax when you are in Laos.
