Getting there & around Bangkok

Getting There

Bangkok is the main Asian transport centre and there are flights from most of the well known airports from around the world to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Getting Around

Bangkok, an exciting city with a great deal of tourist attractions, comes with different modes of transportation. Getting around Bangkok is easy. The most convenient and fastest ways to get around the city are taking the sky train (BTS) and/or the subway (MRT). With their connecting stations and varied routes, BTS and MRT are tourist shoppers' favorite. Both of them can take you to countless shopping areas including, for example, Ratchaprasong, Siam Square, and Chatuchak. Your city tour can be incredibly flexible for both BTS and MRT operate daily from 6:00 – 24:00 hrs.

A metered taxi, or "Taxi-Meter" as Thai people call it, is another comfortable way to travel around Bangkok. It gives you privacy and, since all of them are metered, no bargain is needed. To use its service, you can either wait at designated spots (market by a taxi sign) or hail a moving one, with a red light on the windscreen, from the street. For your own benefits, do not forget to note down two important numbers: the taxi's license plate and its driver's license. These numbers will come in handy when you want to give suggestions or track your belongings that are left behind.

One of the most popular ways of getting around Bangkok among tourists is “Tuk Tuk” or 3-wheel cab. Unlike a "Taxi-Meter," Tuk Tuk's fares are varied upon mutual agreement between its driver and passenger(s) before setting off. Thus, learning and finding about more about directions and distances of where you want to go in advance are beneficial especially when bargaining or negotiating over fares.

A bus is another convenient and money-saving way to travel in Bangkok. If you are not in a hurry and want to make a short trip, a city bus is the right choice. These busses are available both with and without air-conditioning. However, the ones with bigger size are more recommended. Be prepared with change or bank notes since fares will be collected in cash on board only.

River Boat: the best way to travel as well as to experience Thai ways of life along the Chao Phraya River is to use boat services. The very first and simple tips for your convenience and safety are making sure to study your routes and fares before boarding and to strictly follow every safety rule as suggested.

Several types of boats are accessible for tourists to take a trip through canals and rivers of Bangkok, ranging from small long-tail boats to big cruises. Nevertheless, always make sure you choose the one that is registered with the Thai Boats Association (TBA). You should also be certain that the boat is in good condition and fully equipped with safety gears. More importantly, if it is a long-tail boat generally available for hourly or daily tour, you should check and compare prices before making a decision.
