Located in the Korat Plateu, in the north west of Thailand, Khon Kaen is a middle sized city with a population of 140,000. Historically Khon Kaen is a relatively new city and has only been in existence for the last 200 years. Nowadays it is a thriving city and is a major hub of technology and education. The renowned Khon Kaen University is situated in the city. If you want to experience Thai traditions, the Thai New Year – otherwise known as Songkran is a great time for a trip to Khon Kaen. The celebrations in the city take place every year on the 13th to the 15th of April.
Weather wise Khon Kaen enjoys a year round hot and humid climate throughout the year. The city has three seasons: the warm season runs from March to May, the rainy season runs from June to October and the cool season runs from November to February. For tourists unaccustomed to the Thai heat it is recommended to travel to Khon Kaen in the cool season.
There are a number of things to experience whilst on a holiday in Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen's most notable sights consist of Buddhist temples and traditions including the City Pillar, San Chao Pueng Thao Kong Ma, the Wat Phra That, the Nongwang temple, the Chai Sri temple and the Wat Nong Wang Muang. The Khon Kaen city museum also provides an interesting experience and for landscape-lovers, the Beung Kaen Nakhon Lake is highly recommended.
Khon Kaen is well known for its production of silk so for tourists wanting to know more a visit to the Sala Mai Thai is an excellent attraction where you can check out the evolution of the Thai silk throughout the ages. If silk is a subject that's interesting to you, you can try venturing out of town towards Chonnabot – also known as the town of silk making. For a taste of local charm and food, the food market opposite of the Charoen hotel should be a mandatory stop.
There are a number of ways to reach the city once you are already in Thailand- Khon Kaen can be reached by bus, train or plane. Flights to Khon Kaen airport depart three times a day from Bangkok. Once in the city the best way to travel is by songthaew or tuk tuk with neither transport option costing more than 50 baht for travel around the city.
Khon Kaen does not enjoy as many tourists as other cities in Thailand although there are still a number of accommodation options for people visiting the town. Accommodation ranges from simple guest houses to hotels. Popular choices include the Glacier Hotel (1500 baht per night), Khon Kaen Orchid (550 baht per night), Roma (500 baht per night) and the Tonwa Residence and Resort (prices start at 800 baht per night). Although the city is relatively quiet in tourist terms this is a fantastic place to spend a few nights on a trip to Thailand!
