Perth Travel Guide

Perth, sometimes dubbed the 'City of Light', is the capital of Western Australia and in the top ten of The Economist's most liveable cities in the world. It sits on the west coast of Australia along the Swan River and is an interesting city as we hope our Perth travel guide will convince you. Although founded in 1829, it is a place of great antiquity, having been inhabited by the indigenous Whadjuck Noongar people for some 40,000 years. It was the Aborigines who named the Swan River, believing it to have been created by a giant serpent.

You can take a leisurely cruise along the meandering Swan River for an excellent view of modern Perth with its skyscrapers and vineyards. You can even dine aboard as you watch the illuminated city skyline or take a lunchtime cruise as far as Fremantle to explore its many heritage sites or enjoy a sightseeing tram tour. Alternatively, go into the Swan Valley and take a wine tasting tour of the family run vineyards and dine at one of the riverside vineyard restaurants.

Adjacent to the Swan River is Kings Park Botanic Gardens offering such a wealth of things to do that one day will certainly not be enough to do justice to it. There are about a thousand square acres of bushland, parkland and botanical and water gardens as well as picnic areas, cafes and top class restaurants to cater for every dining need.

A short ferry ride from Perth is Rottnest Island, once a penal colony, later a military training area and now one of the most popular year round getaway places in Western Australia. It is a car free island with 63 superb beaches and picturesque bays. The crystalline waters make it ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving and with reefs and shipwreck sites to explore, it is hardly surprising that these are such popular pastimes. Rottnest is also home to the quokka, a wallaby-like marsupial which is responsible for the island's name (Dutch explorers, thinking the quokka was some sort of rat, named the island Rottenest – meaning rats' nest).

Perth itself has some superb white sand beaches along its Sunset Coast. The coastline is pristine and the Indian Ocean clean, clear and warm. For sun worshiping, water sports or finding the best vantage points for a spot of whale watching or joining the dolphins for a swim, Perth has the beach solution for you to make your visit truly complete.
