Cyprus Travel Guide

Cyprus travel guideLegend has it that Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of Love, so it is no surprise that this is such a romantic holiday destination, blessed with natural beauty. 800 kilometers of coast and 300 sunny days a year promise an idyllic setting for those in search of a tan, but the island is also steeped in the history and mythology of the Mediterranean. Cyprus has some great travel destinations to explore.

The beaches at Protaras are possibly the finest in Cyprus with glorious golden sand shelving into the warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean. Nearby Paralimni is set back from the coast and, after the sun has gone down, livens up to provide a refreshing alternative to the more animated nightlife of its close neighbour, the partygoer's resort of Ayia Napa. Just along the coast is Larnaca – a major holiday destination since 1970s. Its easy-going charm, the Palm Trees or Finikoundas Promenade and older quarters give the town a unique somewhat Middle Eastern character. A few minutes away from Larnaca, the long sandy beach at Pyla offers a wide range of water sports.

Further west along the sun-drenched south coast is the cosmopolitan city of Limassol where you can while away the hours happily browsing its speciality shops, elegant boutiques and colourful markets, or enjoying a meal and a drink at one of its local Greek taverns. This is the perfect base from which to explore the Troodos Mountains with Nine Byzantine churches classified as world heritage sites by UNESCO. The fastest developing holiday resort on the island is almost certainly Paphos, a charming fishing harbour with nearby pebble and beaches. The capital of Cyprus in Roman times, it has earned UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site status for its ancient monuments and archaeological treasures. Cyprus tourist attractions never run out.

The fascinating town of Kyrenia (Girne) is the tourism capital of Northern Cyprus. With its celebrated horseshoe harbour overlooked by a magnificent ancient castle, all set against the backdrop of the mighty Besparmak Mountains, it is a place many regard as the most bewitching of anywhere in the Mediterranean.

South Cyprus and North Cyprus are on the same island but totally different regions from a traveler's point of view. Please visit North Cyprus travel guide for information about the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Book hotels in Northern Cyprus if you are planning to pay a visit.

Getting out & about

What to do: to escape the summer heat, drive up into Troodos Mountains just above Limassol and walk among the cooling pines and cedars. The surrounding countryside produces most of the island's wine, so be sure to stop at a nearby Tavern in one of the many picturesque villages just waiting to be discovered. If shopping is more your style for a break from the beach, best buys include handmade lace, leather goods, pottery and silks. Or just stock up on holiday souvenirs.

Unmissable: Among the more deserted beaches of Cyprus are several of the protected nestling grounds of the endangered green and loggerhead turtles. If you are luck enough to be visiting the island during the hatching season, conservation programmes such as the Turtle Watch Team on the Karpas Peninsula in the north, or the Lara Turtle Project in the south's Lara Bay sometimes invite organised trips to share the experience.

North Cyprus car hire is a great way of getting around in Cyprus.

Getting to Cyprus

Whether you're visiting the north or south of Cyprus the cheapest and easiest way is typically to fly to either Larnaca or Paphos and travel on to your chosen resort from there. Cyprus is a small island and the journey from North to South shouldn't take longer than an hour. North Cyprus holidays offer totally different views to visitors. Flights to Paphos and Larnaca are frequent from major European cities.
