Interlaken travel guide
Interlaken is one of Switzerland's oldest and most popular tourist destinations and our Interlaken travel guide aims to bring you the travel and tourism information you will need if you are planning a visit to this well-loved resort. It sits between Lakes Thun and Brienz and Mounts Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the Bernese Oberland and, needless to say, it contains some of Switzerland's most spectacular Alpine scenery.
And this scenery is probably best enjoyed from one of the delightful alpine railways. The railway station of Jungfraujoch is the highest one in Europe and takes in some breathtaking panoramic views through 'windows' hewn into the rocks on its ascent. The Bernese Oberland; Wengernalp cogwheel railway Schynige Platte all combine fabulous alpine vistas with an enjoyable and nostalgic mode of travel.
Then there is the Harder Kulm cablecar from which unparalleled panoramic views can be seen, and wild animal park makes an excellent excuse for the ride. With the children still in mind, the amusingly-named Heimwehfluh funicular offers another great view as well as a model railway, toboggan run and children's playground. But if you fancy doing it the hard way, take a hike! There are numerous hiking trails to be followed, which can be combined with train or cable when you feel in need of a little help.
And if you still haven’t had enough of the views, try the unique experience of skydiving or hang-gliding in the sparkling, crisp alpine air to survey it all from a very different angle. Fly like a bird and experience the grandeur of Interlaken from every direction. In winter, of course, you can enjoy great skiing at resorts in any one of these location.
When your feet are firmly on the ground, you will want to explore the cultural life of the area. The Jungrau Tourism Museum shows exactly why Inerlaken has been such a popular tourist area for centuries. In nearby Thun is the Historic Museum at Castle Thun and the Art Museum and Gallery. And do delight the little ones, why not take in Teddyland, with its gorgeous collection of old and new cuddly teddy bears.
St Beatus Caves is another impressive attraction. Explore the glittering calcite formations and waterfalls in the spacious subterranean halls; enjoy a boat trip or cruise on Lake Thun or Brienz; a leisurely riverside stroll taking in the parks and gardens or explore the attractive avenues of shops interspersed with parks and little churches in downtown Interlaken. There is really nothing in which this magical region of Switzerland is lacking to refresh and restore body, mind and soul.
