Montreux travel guide
In western Switzerland, on Lake Geneva's northeast shore, surrounded by vineyards and sheltering beneath the Alps sits the town of Montreux. Our Montreux travel guide is dedicated to bringing you travel and tourism information about the area to help you make the most of your visit to this special place. It is, of course, widely known for its media awards such as the Golden Rose and Golden Award of Montreux and perhaps more especially for the Montreux Jazz Festival.
It is also an important wine growing region and its geographical location dictates its mild climate and vegetation like pines, cypresses and palm trees, not usually associated with Switzerland. But two things that are very much Swiss are cheese and chocolate! Of the many scenic trains traversing the beautiful countryside around Montreux, most will remember the Chocolate train. This enables you to travel first class in 'Belle Époque' grandeur through the beautiful alpine countryside to the famous cheese-making region of Gruyere to learn about the making of this delicious cheese before going on to tour the Cailler chocolate factory at Broc. Needless to say, samples are included in the tours.
Other scenic train routes are the Golden Pass – a series of three railway lines between Montreux, Zweisimmen, Interlaken and Lucerne; an experience that feels like weaving in and out of different worlds and eras but which are all hauntingly beautiful. There is also the Rochers-de-Naye cog railway which takes you 2042 metres up to the summit of the Alps for the snow sports or simply to experience the most breathtaking panoramic views out over Lake Geneva and far beyond. While there you can also visit the Marmots' Paradise, sure to enthral any little ones in tow; as well as the alpine flower garden.
Down beneath the clouds there are also many delights to discover. Nearby Chillon Castle is a mediaeval masterpiece that should not be missed when visiting the area. With its Roman and early Gothic architecture beautifully restored it can be explored from the top of its towers to the depths of its dungeons. With its marvellously picturesque setting you will feel you have been magically transported far back in time to that era where myth and reality blurred into one.
There are many historic buildings in the town of Montreux as well as diverse galleries and museums. As always in Switzerland, life seems to centre around the countries beautiful lakes and Montreux is no exception. Apart from all the usual water based activities, there is a beautiful lakeside promenade linking Montreux with Vevey under arbours of flowers and through well-managed gardens, making a romantic moonlight stroll by the water an absolute must to guarantee lasting, happy memories of Montreux.
